Overview - Pentadecanoic acid (C15:0)

Description of Pentadecanoic acid (C15:0)

Pentadecanoic acid is a dietary odd-chain fatty acid (aka C15:0). C15:0 occurs naturally (but only in relatively small amounts) in whole fat milk and butter, lard, beef, sheep, fish and fish derived oils; in some vegetables (e.g., cucumber cabbage); and in algae and seaweed.

Large cohort trials have shown that higher dietary intake of C15:0 are associated with a lower overall mortality and increased longevity. C15:0 is available as a dietary supplement and a pre-clinical trial found that is was able to lower glucose, cholesterol, pro-inflammatory cytokines, as well as body weight in a mouse model of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Pentadecanoylcarnitine (PDC) is a novel endocannabinoid (discovered 2022) that is associated with activities relevant to both physical and mental health. PDC is an endogenous metabolite derived from C15:0. PDC is an agonsit at CB1 and CB2; a 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B receptor agonist; and a histamine H1 and H2 receptor antagonist.

C15:0 may induce therapeutic effects in obesity, metabolic syndrome, aging, cardiovascular illness, strengthens cellular integrity, improve mitochondrial energy production, gentle uplift in mood, improved sleep and regulate appetite.

C15:0 binds with PPAR (alpha and delta); C15:0 is an AMP-activated protein kinase activator; C15:0 is a histone deacetylase 6 inhibitor.
