PRIMARY STUDY

Delta9-tetrahydrocannabivarin testing may not have the sensitivity to detect marijuana use among individuals ingesting dronabinol

Key Findings:  This study investigated whether Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) could differentiate between the use of illicit marijuana and pharmaceutical THC like dronabinol among cannabis-dependent patients, finding that THCV was not a reliable indicator for recent marijuana use in heavy users, as half of the subjects had undetectable levels of THCV-COOH despite testing positive for THC-COOH, suggesting variability in cannabis strain composition could influence detection outcomes.
