PRIMARY STUDY

Cannabis--psychosis pathway independent of other types of psychopathology

Key Findings:  In a 14-year Dutch follow-up study assessing 1580 individuals from childhood through adolescence, it was found that the link between cannabis use and subsequent psychotic symptoms occurred independently of earlier detected psychopathology, suggesting that cannabis use is a specific risk factor for developing psychotic symptoms, and preventive measures targeting cannabis use could potentially reduce the incidence of psychosis in vulnerable populations.
