PRIMARY STUDY

J. L. Milton, M.D., (1884). On the Pathology and Treatment of Gonorrhœa. New York: W. Wood & Co.

Key Findings:  In this book (1884) the author writes: "Copaiba.–Perhaps without exception the most potent and generally used of all the internal remedies for gonorrhoea is copaiba, one of the most nauseous drugs ever found out." The latter reference was to the adverse effects patients would have to endure after drinking larges doses of the oil. The authors further reports that while in 1859 alone 151,075 pounds of copaiba were imported into England, a large enough amount to treat to supply a half a million people with a strong dose three times a day for nearly four weeks, the end results were often reported as mixed.
